Top 5 reasons Allen-Bradley May not be your best application solution

Hi my name is Jack Marsh with Innovative IDM. Today I’d like to talk a little bit about Allen Bradley and maybe perhaps why it’s not always the best solution for your application. Allen Bradley makes fine products, and they are quality products, and they’ve got a very broad offering, but they are not always the perfect solution for every application. We’ve really identified, 5 reasons why that’s the case.

Alan Bradley has a very successful top down marketing approach, and convinced large end users in specific market segments, to standardize on their products. And then those end users can dictate to the machine builders that they go to, that Allen Bradley is the products that’s going to be used in their machines, but that allows Allen Bradley to charge more for their hardware and software. They don’t have to be competitive with the market if their users are dictating their products are going to be used in the machines. There’s also the support cost. If you don’t have a service agreement, or a purchase order, or a credit card, handy when you call Allen Bradley for factory support you’re going to be out of luck. So you better have those things in mind when you call to get support from them

Then all of their software sold on an alacart basis, so say for example you purchase the PLC programming software then say later on down the road you find that you need to configure some network communications, or perhaps you want to simulate the PLC and HMI interactions without having the hardware present. Well that network communication suit is an additional product you’re going to have to purchase, the simulation package is an additional product you’re going to have to purchase. Wherein a lot of other manufactures those functions are built into the software you buy for the programming.

Another thing Alan Bradley does that allows them to offer a very broad product line without incurring high development cost is to private label products from other manufactures, but the downside of that is there is not a consistent look and feel across the product line. So a small ac drive for example may program and configure completely differently than the large variable frequency drives from Allan Bradley. And if one of the manufacturers there private labeling from happens to have a discontinuation or product change there are ramifications for Allen Bradley products that are beyond their control, there might not be a simple replacement for that.

And then the last thing to consider is the international support. While Allen Bradley has a very large market share in the US their presence in Europe and Asia is not nearly as large so if you’re building machines for the overseas market and you’re going to need support after it’s installed that might be an issue.

If you’d line to research some of the options to Allen Bradley such as Omron, Yaskawa, Parker, or Wago, please visit our website at innovativeidm.com and remember Innovative IDM is the home of the legendary customer experience.

Hi, I’m Adam Ring with Innovative-IDM. You know, when I walk through manufacturing plants, sometimes I’ll come across a control panel where you open it up and look inside and you see this technology that is like 30, 40 years old. So what’s starting to happen is, customers are finding that a lot of the controls in their automation are starting to really become aged, and when that happens if something breaks it’s really, really hard to find.

We find a lot of people who try and search on eBay to find replacement parts. Sometimes they’ll send them in and try to get parts repaired. But as they continue to age, the repair gets more and more expensive and eventually things just get to the point where they’re not repairable anymore. One of the worst things that happens is a major component necessary for the operation of a machine goes out and then the machine is completely rendered useless until you either find a new part or completely rebuild the controls for it. And so by retrofitting a control panel, you’re able to remove any of those obsolete components and replace them with the current up-to-date stuff that’s readily available. It gets rid of all of your hard to find really difficult parts, it enables you to not have to worry about repairs for a while.

Typically the life of a new control panel, before you have to really start repairing stuff, usually lasts about 10 years before it starts to break down and then you eliminate that big terrible major risk of down time. And everyone knows, whatever the cost to build a new control panel is usually minimal in regards to or compared to what it costs if a machine goes down or can’t produce products for weeks or months on end while a new control panel is being designed and built.
So overall, it’s a really good idea if you’ve got aged control panels where a component going out could really, really cost some major downtime and production loss, it’s a good idea to go ahead and take a look at retrofitting those control panels.

If you’d like help in that regard take a look at innovativeidm.com. We are Home of the Legendary Customer Experience.

5 Reasons Manufacturers Outsource Assembly Work

Hi Adam Ring with Innovative IDM. Now it’s a growing trend in industry for regional equipment manufactures to outsource all or part of their assembly work. Now there’s five primary reasons why a company might look at doing that.
The first one is the idea of variable versus fixed overhead. If you hire a bunch workers and have a large building you have quite a bit of fixed overhead because you got to pay for that rent every month, you got to pay the salaries of those employees, you got to pay for the benefits. So whether you have a lot of work to do or a little bit of work to do you still have to pay that fixed overhead.
Well if you outsource that assembly work then you are only paying for the work when you need it and as much as you need it. And so if you get a lot of work come in the door one day you can outsource that and another company basically like Innovative IDM could provide that assembly work for you. And if things slow down hey you don’t have to lay them off you don’t have to fire them you don’t have to pay unemployment you just simply don’t place more orders and when things get busy again you can place more orders with them.
Another point of why manufacturers outsource assembly work is you don’t have to go through the whole cycle of hiring, of training, and then firing, and then basically doing that over and over and over again in order to maintain a good staff of assembly techs. Also another really, really good reason why a lot of companies outsource their assembly work is they are just not in the business of doing certain things. Take this control panel for example. If you’re not in the business of building control panels, then why build it yourself? Why not outsource it to a company that is in the business, that’s experts at doing work just like this.
Now from an ownership perspective, it enables you by outsourcing all of the assembly work or a portion of it, in order to ship way more machines, so you’re not limited in the resources and space you have available. You can basically distribute that work out, and get more done in the same amount of time. And that in turn leads us to our last point, which improves cash flow so you basically get assemblies in, you don’t have to pay for them for typically 30 days after you get them in, and by that time you can get them installed in your machine, shipped that machine, and get that clock ticking to get paid by your customer. You also reduce the amount of inventory you have to carry so you don’t have that money tied up on the shelf in the form of parts. You can use it in the bank, where its working for you, and by outsourcing assembly work, you can utilize the just in time techniques, that enable you to get parts exactly when you need it so that it can literally be married to the machine when its ready for it and get it out the door as quick as possible.
So once again the 5 most common reasons companies outsource assembly work, the variable verses fixed overhead, not having to hire and train and fire assembly techs, just simply not in the business of doing certain kinds of work, you’re enabled to ship more machines in a given amount of time, and finally you get improved cash flow, reduced inventory, and able to get parts when you need them at the exact time when you need them. So if you’d like to learn more about outsourced assembly work, contact us innovativeidm.com we’re the home of the legendary customer experience.

Hi I’m Gene Gray, welcome to the Innovative IDM intergalactic headquarters. Are you a manufacture? You know, the plant, the factory, where you’ve got the automated production facility, conveyors, robots, different machines. Is your supply chain helping you these days save time, be efficient, be more productive, increase your uptime? If you’re looking to choose a new partner in the automation and controls arena it’s important that you get a supplier that offers you more than parts.

You know it, its common and many of you already know about it, and you talk about it, you know reducing your vendor base, streamlining your supply chain. Well it’s important if you do, that the suppliers that you choose have a bigger basket to help with, and not just a bigger basket of parts. That’s why at Innovative IDM we’ve come up with 4 unique ways to help you. And I say unique not because no one does those things, it’s rare to find someone who does all four of those things. Right buzz?
Innovative IDM is a high tech distributor. We carry great product lines like Omron, SMC, Parker Hannifin, electromechanical products, Yaskawa drives, Yaskawa motion, Wago terminal blocks, and distributed IO. High tech distribution is one of those ways. We also have an industrial electric board repair facility. Where those expensive drives, touch screens, PLCs, when they break you don’t want to replace them new, you want to save a little bit and have them repaired. We do that in house.
Field service, the machine breaks down and your maintenance guy is on vacation, maybe you don’t have the high end tech that you need for the particular type of machine that broke down, well you call us. 24/7 365 we’ll send you a tech.

System integration number 4. That machine is a great machine, it’s been in service for a long time but the electronics are old they’re aged, they’ve been there since maybe the 60s or the 70s it’s time to get the newest greatest electrons. Well for drive centric control systems, we do a great job of engineering in the newest electronic items building that control panels, and commissioning that system for you. To bring that machine just think of the 64 mustang, great car just needs a new engine. So that’s what we do, we help you as the high tech distributer, we have an in-house repair facility, we have field service technicians, 24/7 365 they’re available, and then system integration. When that machine gets old it’s time to begin again, we can help you design a new system to control those machines. You know cradle the grave, we can help you commission the new machine when you buy it, when you start the plant up, keep you running while your plant produces parts, and years later when you need to upgrade we’re there.
Why would we put all those services together? Why would we create a package that’s that easy? That many things in one basket to help save you time? Well of course buzz its simple. It’s innovative, home of the legendary customer experience.

Hi I’m gene gray. Welcome to innovative IDMs intergalactic headquarters. Are you a manufacturing facility a plant with automated machinery, conveyors, and robots, all kinds of things spinning around and moving? Well you’ve got to keep it up and running. Sometimes that’s a stressful thing to do, and expensive, so let’s talk about a couple ways that buzz and I have been discussing that can potentially help you stretch your maintenance dollar, get the most out of that buck, help your budget go just a little bit further.
Now it’s important that when you talk about stretching your maintenance budget that you think about your supply chain. It’s not just the cost of parts, anybody’s going to tell you that that’s important, sure that’s important, but it’s not the most important, but it’s not unimportant. Now I’ve been in this business since 1989 and I’ve found by visiting many different factories that they’re all different, they don’t have the same capabilities. Some of them have different styles of maintenance teams heavier in mechanical or electrical, some have engineering departments, and some don’t have any of that. So what do you do, how do you keep it up and running?
Well one of the things you need to do is preventative maintenance programs and most of you probably know, do those right now, some of you have heard about it, when you have that pm program are you using hot spares? I mean you’ve got that spare sitting over there on the shelf when you bought it but the last time you had a controlled shut down did you install it, take out the other one you know was working fine, to make sure the spare actually works? To make sure that your maintenance people do have the skill set to practice putting that in, in a break down situation. If not, you might want to do that.
When something that’s expensive breaks, you want to stretch your dollar, get it repaired, send it to Innovative IDM we have an in house electronic repair department. Now if you’re one of those plants that don’t have all the resources that you need, maybe you’ve got a controlled shut down coming up, and you have a big project and you need some field service staff. Well outsource it. Innovative has a 24/7 365 field service team. We can send you the extra boots you need to get on the ground to get that project done. Maybe the thing that’s broke down or the problem that your having is too complicated for the staff you have, or like we’ve talked about maybe that guys on vacation, well give us a call we’d be happy to help you out.
Now you really want to get the most out of this dollar, you don’t want to call innovative just when you’re broke down, give us a shout so we can get out there, you can meet our field service team techs before that ever happens, we can get to know your machines, we can get to know your processes, that way if it’s in the middle of the night, production uptime is super important, we can be efficient as a team mate.
Now putting together a company that’s got field service technicians, a repair center, things that we can help you with from an outsourcing perspective, to make sure that your supply chain is playing a part in stretching your budget, why would we go through the trouble to do something like that? Huh buzz why would we do that? Well buzz knows it’s simple it’s innovative, were home to the legendary customer experience.

How To Choose A Field Service Organization

Hello I’m gene gray, buzz and I were sitting around here today at the intergalactic headquarters of innovative and we were talking about a field service organization. And we were thinking, we’ve got a pretty good one, but what’s important to our customers when they choose who to partner with, and more importantly to those customers who haven’t yet picked a field service organization.

Now are you a company that has an automated production facility, you know a factory that’s got equipment like conveyors, robots, different machines that spin around, go back and forth, maybe make paper, steel, who knows. I’ve been at this since 1989 one thing that I found is that regardless of the type of factory that you have when the plant breaks down everybody gets focused, its amazing. It doesn’t matter whether your maintenance, you’re in purchasing, plant management, the focus is to get the plant back up and running, and it makes sense. That sense of urgency needs to be translated and in order for you to pick a good field services organization to come out and help you if you need help you know that hired gun, well they have to have the experience and that staff that understand that sense of urgency.

Now those hired guns, those are the cowboys you know, they love to ride in, the machine is broke down, they’ve got people looking at them, several guys in shirts, some guys in ties, you know staring at their back working on the machine, its high stress, they fix the machine, and they ride out of town they take great satisfaction out of that. These cowboys, one of the things they like is “hey there’s another American factory back in production.”

Now Innovative IDM has been in the field service business since 1971 it’s that experience, it’s the staff that’s been at it for a long time, it’s our culture that helps us understand the sense of urgency, that when you break down that’s the most important thing in the world to you and us. It’s our job to help you get back up and running. We are available 24/7 365. Our field service staff have decades of experience, we continue to bring in new field service technicians right out of school so that we can train and bring up the new generation of field service technicians in this industry, we team them up with field service people who have been in this for 20, some 30 years. So whether you’ve got a machine that’s broke down, or you’ve got a big project that’s coming up where you need a bunch of people to come in, in a controlled shutdown and help you conquer a big project give us a call.

And while we take the time to put together a field service organization like this, top notch, great reputation, just ask for our references. How do we do that? How do we do that buzz? Well why it’s Innovative, home of the legendary customer experience.
